Red Clover Jeopardy

September 5, 2011

Every year my students look forward to voting for their favorite Red Clover book as the grand finale of the program. And part of this grand finale is our annual “Red Clover Jeopardy.”  This game gives students an opportunity to refresh their memories of the books we have read all year long and re-familiarize themselves with all ten so that they cast an informed ballot.  It also allows them to compete with each other- which they love!

Here is the game I will be using this year: www.superteachertools.com/jeopardy/usergames/Sep201136/game1315229664.php . Feel free to edit it to suit your needs (email me for the password).  It is game number 1315229664. The questions reflect the things I will cover when I share the books with students, you may need to alter them so that they reflect the work you do with your students.

Setup and Procedure:

1. Prepare four sets of cards for team use.  Each set has pictures of the ten covers of the Red Clover books on one side, and the team number on the other side.

2. Set up the space so there is room for four teams to sit on the carpet in front of the Smart Board or projection screen.

3.  As a class enters  put them in teams, keeping in mind student strengths so that teams are balanced.

4. Explain the rules:

  • Teamwork is essential, members who are not cooperating with the team will be disqualified. (I use a group to model teamwork with younger students)
  • Your team will decide on one answer and put the appropriate card in the specified location.
  • No changing your answer- cheaters will be disqualified.
  • This game is about having fun and remembering all ten Red Clover Books.  No bragging, whining or pity parties allowed!

5. Start playing the game! Keep score as you go and keep the pace up so that you can finish in one class period- you can’t save it and finish it later, unfortunately.
